We believe international football experiences are more than just travel, they are structured developmental opportunities. To explore this further, we invited Rozreena Rosman, Sport Psychology Consultant and former Villarreal Malaysia Academy professional, with whom we closely collaborate as our local expert, to share her perspective on the psychological impact of international exposure in youth football

''Through my work in sport psychology and football operations, including my time at Villarreal Malaysia Academy following Spanish football principles, I’ve had the opportunity to observe youth development from multiple perspectives: on the pitch, within academy structures, and through the evolving mindset of players and coaches.

These diverse viewpoints have led me to one consistent truth: exposure to international environments complements domestic development by broadening tactical, cultural and performance perspectives. Collaborating with organizations such as Run The Ball, who work directly alongside LaLiga clubs, reinforces this conviction. I have seen firsthand how international exposure plays a transformative role, providing the necessary catalyst to advance player talent, coaching standards, and overall academy growth.''

Development is more than talent. What separates players long-term is how well they adapt, cope, and perform under unfamiliar pressure. Whenever players travel to another country, they are entering a new psychological classroom where adaptability, emotional regulation, and decision-making are tested in real time.

This is where growth happens. Players learn:

  • Emotional regulation in unfamiliar settings.

  • Confidence developed independent of familiar structures.

  • Focus and composure when routines change.

These skills are directly transferable to match pressure, selection moments, and elite pathways.

As a sport psychology consultant, I believe pressure is not something to be avoided. Instead, it acts as vital information that assists players in faster decision making environments and new interpretations of mistakes and accountability.

Part of my work involves introducing players to the Inverted U-theory and the IZOF (Individual Zones of Optimal Functioning) model, both of which I’ve found especially useful in out of comfort zone experiences.

International exposure naturally places players under new levels of pressure, unfamiliar environments, stronger opponents, different coaching styles, and cultural expectations.

The Inverted U-theory helps players understand that added arousal can enhance performance up to an optimal point. The IZOF model takes this further, showing that every player has a unique zone of emotional arousal where they perform at their best.

Playing abroad reveals how they respond when situations feel unfamiliar and helps them identify their own performance zone, insights that are invaluable for long-term youth development.

My background in operations has shown me how environments don’t just influence behavior, they shape it. Exposure to international systems, known for clear role expectations, a strong football identity, and consistent performance standards, gives players and coaches a fresh perspective.

They gain insights into alternative session structures, feedback styles, and player centered development models that encourage higher standards of professionalism, responsibility, and self-discipline.

This shift in mindset is one of the most valuable takeaways. Players return with a clearer understanding of what is required daily, not just in matches which can positively influence their team environment back home. Coaches, in turn, learn how environments affect mindset, creating pathways to better support players through mistakes, setbacks, and growth phases.

International Exposure as a Strategic Development Tool International experiences are a strategic move that should be viewed as more than short term opportunities. When combined with psychological reflection, they become powerful tools for long term development. Players and coaches return more self-aware, adaptable, and equipped with the qualities necessary for stable and consistent progression.

Modern football development goes beyond technical training and match exposure, it requiresperspective and adaptability, qualities that international experiences can help build. Through this, development doesn’t just happen faster, it becomes more intentional and impactful.

International exposure alone is powerful. But it only becomes a real developmental tool when it has a clear purpose. Without specific objectives, a reflection process, and psychological integration, it’s just a football tour. It only becomes a competitive advantage when it’s treated as part of a player’s and coach's education.

Clubs and academies that view international travel as part of a long-term development strategy, not just a short-term competition, are the ones positioning their players and coaches for sustainable growth.

At Run The Ball, our job is to provide the structure behind the trip. We build on the foundations Rozreena describes to ensure that every stage, tournament, and training camp is a planned step forward in their pathway.

Because development isn’t an accident, it’s a deliberate design
